One of the things that I have been working on lately, is holding my “self-care” accountable. Basically, it means that I have been trying to take more time out for myself and remembering to take care of myself and my health. You know, to hold myself accountable for my own self-care and happiness or in other words:
Being Self-Care Accountable:
I have never been good at taking care of myself. I know, shocker, right?! However, it’s totally true and happens among my people more than you know! Who are my people?
- Parents, of all kinds
- Parents, of children with special needs
- People with mental illness
- People with chronic illness
- People that just get too damn busy
- People like you. You are my people.
Yes, all of us can forget to take care of ourselves, whether we are putting others ahead of ourselves or not. Self-care is hard and holding ourselves self-care accountable, is even harder!
Things That Can Help You Become Self-Care Accountable:
Daily affirmations or reminders. My current favorite is: “You are not your thoughts. You are your actions!” ~Gary John Bishop from his book Unfu*k Yourself, which I listened to on Audible last month and yes, I recommend it.
A new planner and some fun stickers! I got this cute Yoobi one at Target! Isn’t it cute?! Make your obligations fun and make treating yourself a fun obligation! Schedule an appointment to take yourself out for coffee. Why?! Why the hell not?!
A wicked cool fitness tracker. I’ve been using the Fitbit Versa from Verizon Wireless and man, is it amazing! I love that on top of tracking my steps, sleep and certain health aspects, I can now personalize my Fitbit Versa to fit my mood and use it to hold my “self-care accountable” x2 with the Starbucks app sync! *wink wink*
Easy Ways To Treat Yo’self:
Buy yourself something, when you run errands. I like to add the cost of my favorite Starbucks coffee to my grocery budget, so I can treat myself, while I grocery shop. You could also get yourself a new nail polish, that shirt you’ve been eyeing or something as simple as a piece of chocolate for yourself!
Take 10 minutes, for yourself, before a chore and paint your finger nails! I say 10 minutes, because I use this awesome fast drying polish and that is all the time I need!
Buy the ingredients for a dinner that YOU want to eat, because YOU want to eat it! Who cares if your family likes it or not? They can eat leftovers, cereal or a sandwich.
Take an extra long shower and use all the hot water, either while the kids are at school or at night. You deserve it!
Before you go to bed, stick your blanket and pillow case in the dryer, with some lavender essential oil, and put yourself to bed all warm, cozy and calm!
