Homeschooling, much like public schooling often has to be done on a budget. As homeschoolers, our budget is often pretty small. However, a small budget doesn’t have to stop our kids from enjoying fun and educational field trips! Here are some of the free field trips that we have enjoyed.
1. State Parks and Nature Centers:
State Parks are always an amazing way to spend a day. Hiking, foraging, geocaching and having a scavenger hunt are just a few of the great things you can do.
Nature Centers are often located in a State Park and offer free educational information about local flora and fauna and great walking trails. If you Google “Local Nature Centers“, you should be able to find one in your area. Also, often if you give them a call, they can setup a program or class for you, your children and anyone else you would like to bring.
2. Local Library:
Your local library can be a treasure trove of field trip fun. Not only can you go to find new books, but local libraries often have free programs and activities for kids. Some of the include story time, author Q & A’s, book themed activities and more. Also, be sure to check your local library for free passes to attractions. Sometimes, your local library will have passes to attractions that usually cost money that you can “check out”.
3. Public Works:
Never be afraid to utilize your cities resources. Call your local city hall or you can call the departments individually and ask if they can show your kids how the departments work. We have experienced our local Police Department, Fire Department and Sanitation Department!
There are always local volunteer organizations that are willing to share their knowledge, experience and services with our kids. Google or call around to your local food banks, homeless shelters, parks and recreations, nursing homes, animal shelters and any place else you can think of. Ask them what kind of volunteering your children could experience with them.
5. Bakeries and Candy Shops:
It never hurts to give your local, small businesses a call and see if they could set something up for you. A lot of times, they don’t mind and are extremely happy to do it! Plus, what kid wouldn’t love to make chocolates, glaze donuts or frost a cake?!
These are five (and then some) free field trips that we have experienced and we plan on experiencing a lot more. The main thing is never be afraid to ask. Don’t be afraid to make that call and see what they have available! You will never know if you don’t try!
