Since the days of Shakespeare and even before, mankind has been waxing poetic about sleep. While our sleep is important to us, so important in fact that we write poetry about it, what should be even more important is the way we get that sleep. Crashing down on a greasy dorm couch is not the same as sliding into moonlit sheets, with the surrounding countryside so quiet you can hear the snow fall. There is an art to achieving proper rest, one that should not be ignored. Here are some easy ways to start getting a better night of sleep.
Less Screen Time
You’ve probably heard that staring at a screen right before you go to bed hinders your ability to sleep well. Light from a screen disrupts your melatonin levels, and studies have found that anyone using a computer, iPad, kindle, or television before going to bed will have poorer REM sleep. Stick to books at least an hour before bedtime, but if you really must use a device, for whatever reason, try to eliminate the blue light, as that will improve your quality of sleep.
Some people claim that their lives changed forever the day they switched to cotton sheets. While that may sound dramatic to the rest of us, there must be something in the magic of all-natural, healthy sheets. It’s certainly true that the feel of cotton is more relaxing and inviting, and as sheets are what wrap you into sleep each night, it’s important that your sheets are comfortable. It’s also important to get sheets made in the USA, since you can trust the manufacturing process to be clean from the farm to your bed, and you know that no unethical practices, like non-livable wages, were used in the production of your sleep. Now that will cause sweet dreams.
If the heating in your home is faulty, your thermostat can be lying to you. You set it before you go to bed, trusting the promise that your home will really be the temperature you want. If your old heating system fails to deliver on your thermostat agreement, you’ll wake up needing socks night after night, not sure how you can get the temperature to cooperate. It might be time to get a new heating system or have the old one repaired. Whether you live in Menomonee Falls, WI, or Jersey City, NJ, residential heating repair is only a phone call away.
There are many other ways we can improve our quality of sleep. Since sleep affects your energy and mental capacity for the following day, and even your long-term health, it’s important to take the necessary steps towards getting better rest.
