You may have one or more teenagers who struggle with the perceptions they have of themselves. When they look in their mirrors, they may not see the healthy, beautiful individuals that they are. Their self-images may be distorted by many things including peer pressure, the subtle messages of advertising, and their own inner self-doubts. You as a parent can help your teenagers realize just how special and beautiful they are just by:
Making a Point to Compliment Them Often
Often parents have habits of only pointing out the negative aspects of their children’s looks and behaviors. Make a huge point to look for something attractive in your teen as often as possible. Even if they comes down the stairs, dressed and ready for school, in an outfit that your grandparents would wear, try to think of something nice to say about the fit, the color, or the style.
Advise Them When Opportunities Present Themselves
Also be prepared to help them when they don’t realize that assistance is needed. They may not realize that their skirt hikes up in the back or that their underwear can be plainly seen through their white pants. Gently and tactfully point out the issue and then let them deal with it in their own way. Never embarrass or mock teenagers—they will never trust your opinion again.
Set a Great Example
When a parent is critical of their own appearance, it may make their children hypersensitive to theirs. Talking about how fat you are, how horrible your skin is, or how you wish you were taller, shorter, or prettier, is going to send the message that one’s appearance has to be perfect for a person to be acceptable. Take pride in the way you look and enhance your best features instead of focusing on any flaws you may think you have. Focus also on features and attributes that are not just skin deep.
Get Professional Help
You know your child is perfect just the way they are, but sometimes a little professional help will go a long way in making them feel more confident and attractive. If crooked teeth or bite is an issue, make an appointment and consult with an orthodontist, such as one from Dr. Basil’s Clinic, for options. A dermatologist can also do wonders with teen acne, and a chiropractor can assist with posture.
You can make your teenager feel attractive and appealing with these few steps. Keep an eye out for other opportunities to let each one of them know that they are truly exceptional and one of a kind.
