When you first get accepted into your online masters in counseling, it’s an exciting time. Celebrations are in order and your mind probably starts racing about the many career possibilities the degree will offer. As you get deeper and deeper into online counseling degree programs, the work tends to get harder and more involved. This can leave some students feeling overwhelmed, consumed, and just not motivated to keep up with their programs.
Statistics from the Organization for Economic Co-Operation and Development show that only 46% of students in the U.S. complete their college degree program. What’s even more disappointing is that of the 18 countries the statistics tracked, the U.S. came in last.
So how can you make sure that you stick with your schooling and earn that master’s degree? Here are some tips that you can use that will help you to stay motivated when studying.
Create a Healthy Life Balance
It’s very easy to get caught up in your studies. After all, you want to succeed and make sure you have a fabulous career ahead of you. The problem is that if you put all your energy and focus into one area of your life, the others will suffer, and you’ll burn out very quickly.
Instead, work on creating a healthy life balance. What this means is that you devote enough time to studying, your job (if this applies), your family life, your social life, and of course time for yourself to relax and unwind. Creating this balance will make you feel more positive and energized, thereby giving you the spark you need to continue with your studies.
Put Together a Dream Board
Dream boards were a huge thing just a couple of years ago and while they may have dwindled in popularity, it doesn’t mean you can’t use one. A dream board can be a wonderful way to motivate you, especially if you’re a visual person. You can add clippings of dream jobs, people you admire and respect in the field, quotes that inspire and motivate you, and achievements in your studies that you’re proud of. The dream board can be anything you want it to be.
Align Yourself with Supportive Friends and Family
Making sure you have a strong support network can also help to keep you motivated. There will be days when you find it hard to continue and you’re feeling a bit overwhelmed. This is when you should be able to turn to one of your friends or family members and ask for help, words of encouragement and emotional support so that you can get back at it.
Find a Mentor
Many students find that a mentor in their field of study can provide them with tons of motivation. The mentor can answer questions, help you work out concerns you may have, and provide a window into the world in which you plan on working in.
Within Your Grasp
While staying motivated won’t always be easy, it is necessary if you want to succeed in earning your masters. Remind yourself that your dream career is within your grasp and do all you can to get there.
