It’s time to share our #OneNewFood stories!
What is #OneNewFood? One New Food is all about taking meal times back from our picky kids, one new food at a time! Every month we try at least one new food! A food that our kids (and sometimes, even us) have never tried before! It is usually a healthy food, as we all want our kids to eat healthier!
This month we took on Split Pea and Ham Soup!
We had a lot of ham left over from Easter and I LOVE Split Pea soup, so I wanted to make my simple crock pot recipe. That was when I realized that this was going to be our One New Food because the kids had never had it before!
The recipe is so simple. All you need is:
- 4 cups of chicken stock
- 3 cups of rinsed and sorted split peas
- 2 cups of diced Yukon (yellow) potatoes
- 1 1/2 cups of diced or shredded ham
- Salt and Pepper to taste
Throw all of the ingredients into your crock pot and cook them on high for 6 hours and on low for 10 hours. That’s it. Simple and awesome!
To help you on your One New Food journey, we are giving away a copy of The Rounded Plate Game!
To start the Rounded Plate program, families first set individual goals to eat a certain number of vegetables, fruits and proteins each day. A food chart is provided to give ideas and inspiration for family food choices. Throughout each day, kids and parents can track what healthy foods they have eaten with a daily coloring sheet. The 21-day program uses incentives for when kids and parents meet their daily and weekly goals. Meaningful incentives can be family activities like a trip to the park or a small prize for saving bonus stickers. The entire family’s progress is visibly tracked on a common Rounded Plate scoreboard.
