For stay at home moms, one of the toughest times to get things done is during the Summer. The kids are home from school – and in the house all the time – meaning you have less time to be productive and have the house to yourself. There are trips to go on, messes to clean up, activities that they need rides to, and much more. Once the kids are back in school however, you can finally start to get some things done around the house that you’ve been putting off. Here are just a few suggestions on how to best utilize your new-found time and space.
Organize The House
If you have young kids, chances are they don’t leave things where they first found them. You are probably guilty of this yourself, and as a result, the whole home can become unorganized after a while. The kids being back at school is the perfect time to take a few hours and really organize your home. You can put everything where it needs to be, and find better ways to store things for future use. Here are some great tips on how to organize your home better, and before long your home will be all in order.
Give It A Good Cleaning
While you are organizing everything, you might as well give every room a good cleaning as well. This means more than simply straightening up or giving the rug a vacuum. I’m talking about moving furniture around and dusting behind places that are seldom seen. I’m talking about throwing away garbage that you have been hanging onto for years in your basement. Winter is coming, and you are likely to be cooped up in your house a lot, so be sure it is a place you want to spend your time in. Break out the cleaning supplies and give your home a good scrubbing while the kids are away.
Paint A Room
Moving furniture is a hassle, so if you’ve been wanting to paint a room, a good time to do so may be when you are cleaning it. Painting a room requires a decent amount of time, and you are going to need to move some things around, but it is much easier to do when the kids are at school. You won’t have to worry about the kids coming in and getting into the paint, or providing you with any number of other distractions. That way you can simply focus on the task of painting, and get it done much quicker. Depending on the size of the room, you can probably finish in just a day or two.
Construction or Home Improvement Jobs
When you want to get some larger projects completed around your home, having the kids out-of-the-way will make things easier. Perhaps your home needs a new AC system so that you can have all year cooling, or you want to remodel your kitchen. Whether you are doing the job yourself, or having a professional come in and do it, the job is easier when there are less people in the way. Your schedule may have been too busy during the Summer because of your kids, but now your schedule has some time in it, so try to fit in those larger projects you’ve wanted to get done.
All of your time doesn’t have to be spent improving your home. Now that you have a little more free time, perhaps you want to work on improving yourself. There are many classes that you can take either at a local community college or online that will keep you busy throughout the day. These classes can be hard to focus on during the Summer when you have to spend more time with your children, but if you have the house to yourself all day, you’ll be able to get your work done in quiet. Take some time to work on yourself as well as your home.
Don’t Forget To Relax
You spent all Summer taking care of your kids and doing things around the home. Now that they are back in school, don’t forget to take some time for yourself. Read a book, watch a movie, or work a puzzle. Whatever it is you do to relax, be sure to work that into your schedule as well. With the kids gone you can get a lot more done, such as all the things mentioned above, but that doesn’t mean you have to!
