You’ve got a problem.
And it’s time we took care of it.
Your mindset is holding you and your entire generation back. You need to change it, and soon if you want to not only succeed, but make the world a world you want to live in.
- Sense of Entitlement
Guess what? Not everything is about you. I know that you’ve been told that over and over again, but have you ever stopped to think about it, I mean, really think about it? You are one of 7.125 BILLION people on this earth. Do you know how large 7 billion is? It would take 210 years for 7 billion seconds to pass (that means that 7 billion seconds ago, it was 1794 — the year Eli Whitney patented the cotton gin), and 7 billion steps would take you around the entire world 106 times.
Don’t get me wrong, as a human being, you are entitled to some rights, such as the right to an opinion, as well as life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness (note that it says the PURSUIT of happiness, NOT happiness in and of itself). However, everyone else is entitled to these same things. You are not MORE important or entitled than anyone else. We are all here on the world together, as members of society. Give up your sense of self-importance and start caring about others.
Millennials are often labeled as lazy entitled narcissists and it’s true — ⅓ of them still live in their parents house, 40% are unemployed, and due to cost of tuition and student loans, less people are going to college (this is part of the reason why there is a physician shortage). Don’t pretend that you’re not lazy too. When’s the last time that you refused to walk the mere 5 feet to change the channel because you couldn’t find the remote? If you don’t want to do something, you don’t do it.
- It Could Never Happen to ME
This point goes along with the millennials sense of entitlement — millennials have this idea that “it could never happen to me,” so they engage in risk taking behavior such as texting while driving (or playing Pokemon GO while driving), using marijuana and other drugs, and drinking alcohol, even if they are underage. It doesn’t matter how many videos they see about the dangers of doing these activities, they still do them. Admit it, you do it too.
- Social Media Addiction
On average, millennials spend between 1 and 6 hours on social media every day. Many report that they feel naked or like they are missing something if they accidentally leave their phone at home. This habit can deteriorate relationships, cause reckless behavior (ie texting and driving), and contribute to depression.
The moral? Put down your phone!!!
Luckily, my dear Millennials, not everything about you is bad. Remember those 4 things that I listed above as your weaknesses? Those also happen to be your strengths. If you take the millennial mindset and use it to your advantage, you will be able to do amazing things with your life.
- Go Getter Attitude
If properly honed, a millennial’s sense of entitlement is actually a brilliant thing. It can drive you to do amazing things if you want to. Learn how to become self-motivated and to fight for the things that you deserve, instead of expecting them to be handed to you. Learn how to work hard, and then do it.
While you may be lazy at times, this trait also makes you extremely flexible. If you and a friend were going to go out, but then they decided to Netflix and chill instead, you get it. Sometimes you do it too. However, this has larger implications such as a lack of prejudice towards people of other races and backgrounds, and the ability to change gears at a moment’s notice. These two things are necessary as our world changes towards a global market economy.
- Risk Taking/Optimism
Millennials are not as afraid to take the risks necessary to follow their dreams as previous generations. They were raised on ideas of entrepreneurship and innovation — and they want a life of flexibility and freedom. They are also very optimistic about the future. If you can learn to focus your risk taking, you can make your life and the world more rich and beautiful, and follow your dreams while doing so.
- Amazing Networking Skills
Because you are so in touch with the internet world, you know how to reach potential clients and customers (even if you don’t know that you do). You know how you get over 100 likes on every Instagram post? Most businesses would do anything to have that kind of following. If you can learn how to use those kinds of skills in the business world and not just in your personal life, you will be an incredible asset to any modern company.
Darci Maxwell is a walking contradiction, and she loves it. You are just as likely to find her outside tearing up a mountain as you are to discover her curled up at home with a steamy cup of herbal tea watching Dr. Who. She is terrified of heights, yet she is the first one to run to the edge and marvel at the spellbinding sight. As an introverted extrovert, writing is her favorite way to connect with many people while still enjoying the comforts of her own home. Her favorite quote is “Here’s to the movers, the shakers, and the mischief-makers.”
